It’s no secret that Vancouver is a city of “action,” and this attitude is in full-force during the summer months. ILSC’s summer Junior Program is known for its amazing programs, fun activities and awesome locations that offer the opportunity to learn another language through an amazing cultural immersion experience. The English Summer Camp program at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is no exception to this. This year, ILSC expects over 200 students to take over the beautiful UBC campus and show them how juniors do it! Don’t take our word for it, all you have to do is follow these few simple steps to have the best summer ever in Vancouver!
Step one: Live on campus!
This one is easy – all you have to do is get here! During your stay, which can last anywhere from 1 to 5 weeks, you will stay on campus in UBC’s Totem Park residence. You’ll receive the full university experience by living in dorms, choosing from a bunch of awesome food options in the cafeteria and exploring the beautiful campus. The University of British Columbia is among the top 40 universities in the world, join us this summer and you’ll find out why!
Step two: Pick an activity (or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5…you get the idea)
By far, one of the best parts of the ILSC junior program at UBC is the wide variety of activities that you can join. Because ILSC has partnered with UBC summer camps, participants have their choice of almost any activity, sport, hobby or skill that the UBC summer camp runs. There’s Song Writing 101 for the superstars, Creative Writing for the future Shakespeare’s and all kinds of visual arts for the Picassos out there. Other activities include musical theatre, water polo, film production, self defense, sailing, yoga, ultimate Frisbee, song writing, multicultural cooking, first aid, and even Quidditch (for all the wizards!) – And that’s just for starters. From baking to baseball, whatever your hobby, you will be sure to find it.
Step three: Make friends for life!
One of the best parts (okay, there’s a lot of “best parts”) of the ILSC Junior Camp at UBC is that everyone there is just like you. They came from another country looking for an awesome experience while at the same time learning the English language. You’ll be surrounded by other international students in a fun and exciting setting. Not only that, when you join in the various activities throughout the week you will be doing so alongside your soon-to-be new Canadian friends, surrounding yourself with native English speakers. See how many friends you can make from different countries!
Step four: Learn a new language!
This step is very important! Another aspect that the UBC summer program is something you can’t find in your typical classroom. You will be completely immersed in a new culture and language – the best way to learn. Your leaders, other participants, and just about everyone else will be speaking English in order to help you with your goal of learning a new language. Between the fun and friends, each day will have some form of language study from amazing teachers who will help you expand your knowledge in fun and interesting ways.
So there you have it! Follow our four easy steps and you will be well on your way to creating an extraordinary adventure this summer. Immerse yourself in a new culture, make forever friends, and learn a new language all in the beautiful setting of Vancouver. Summer is best spent making memories and the UBC Junior Program will help you make some that are unforgettable as you have your best. Summer. Ever.
