Chinese New Year Vancouver

Chinese New Year Vancouver

The Chinese New Year is the most significant festival for ethnic Chinese around the world.  It has been said that it is a combination of the Western Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year.

According to an ancient legend, people were once tormented by a beast called a Nian – a ferocious creature with an extremely large mouth, capable of swallowing several people in a single bite.  Relief from the Nian came only when an old man tricked the beast into disappearing.   Today, New Years is about family reunions and wishing everyone good fortune in the coming year. Korean Noodle Soup

Korean Noodle Soup

Before departing from Korea to Vancouver , I thought I wouldn’t eat Korean food very much in Vancouver. But, when I arrived here I found a lot of Korean food.

Also, I was really surprised at the sight of   Korean instant cup or bowl noodles in the vending machine at  ILSC ! And I saw a lot of foreigners eating various kinds of noodle soups.

When I miss Korea, I usually eat Korean instant noodle soup. Whenever I don’t have enough time or I want to eat spicy foods, I often have soup because it is very convenient to make and it  takes just 3 minutes. According to a Korean noodle company website, there are 197 different kinds of instant noodle soups in Korea. Most Korean noodle soups have a spicy taste and they are made with beef powder. Teacher Training

Hands-on Teacher Training at Greystone College

Fewer employment opportunities for teachers in the public school system has led many to refocus in on the ever-strengthening English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching market.  By adding a TESL Canada (Teachers of English as a Second Language in Canada) approved teaching certificate to their teaching arsenal, or to their undergraduate degree, these new teachers will find themselves leapfrogging to the front of the classroom much more quickly.

One only needs to look at the demand for ESL teachers abroad; postings promoting opportunities to teach abroad extend from Craigslist to University Employment Fairs to traditional Job Boards and newspaper classifieds. New teachers wanting to see the world and teach English are finding a pathway to pay down those student loans, see the world and live their passion for teaching.

Closer to home, Vancouver is an ESL hub with international students arriving here from all four corners of the planet.  Language schools are constantly looking for qualified instructors and go into a virtual hiring frenzy for the summer months when international student numbers balloon. Linda Moore, Academic Director for ILSC-Vancouver commented, “Our need for teachers has reached epic proportions and there is no end in sight. It is no longer just a summer phenomenon, the need is year round.” Continue reading »

For many cultures, December and January mark a significant holiday season, time for giving gifts and sharing good food and good company.  It’s a time to be thankful for the things we have in life, and also a time to think about those who might not be as fortunate as us.  ILSC’s schools have taken this to heart, and many of our campuses are running fundraisers to help support a range of local and global causes.

Here’s the run-down of what’s ILSC staff and students have done this season:

At ILSC-New Delhi –Blankets and Winter Clothes for the Homeless

ILSC-New Delhi runs a monthly community outreach program.  The condition of homeless people of Delhi is very problematic. It is estimated that Delhi has around 1,000,000 people living below the poverty line.  This month, ILSC-ND decided to raise funds ($ 200 approx. or even more) to buy blankets/winter clothes for the homeless children/people as xmas giving. Last month, ILSC-New Delhi did a similar kind of activity and it was a huge success, they managed to raise $140 in a week!   The students join in the activity and distribute the blankets and clothes to the homeless.  This month (December), they are doing a Christmas drive and including some candies and food for the distribution.  We hope to be the Santa in people’s lives and put a smile on their face!
